An Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in Ituri province (DR Congo). Preliminary laboratory tests indicated the
Ebola virus was found in 13 of 20 samples; the results suggest a variant that does not correspond to the Zaire Ebola virus – sequencing of the samples is still ongoing.
Approximately 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported – mainly in the Mongwalu and health zones.
Rwampara – including four deaths among the laboratory-confirmed cases.
Given population mobility, the uncertain security situation, and the geographical proximity of the affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan, the authorities are concerned about the risk of further spread.
